Early New York Subway Graffiti 1973 - 1975 Revised

I met Keith roughly a year and a half ago when he had released a limited number of hard back copies of his 'Early New York Subway Graffiti' book and was taken in with the the great pictures Keith had caught during 73' - 75' in N.Y

Keith has now teamed up with Tangent Books to re-release this fantastic chapter in history. The book has been revamped with 40 new images plus words from some of the pioneers of the subway graffiti scene.

As well as capturing the bombed transit system there are some truly fantastic pictures of life in New York during these years.

The launch of the book is being held on Thursday 24th November at Rise in Bristol. Come along have a chat and get your book signed by Keith.

The man behind the Collab: Interview with Keith Hopewell (SPZero76)

Bristol artist Keith Hopewell, who often works under the name SPZero76, put an idea up on Facebook last October. ‘Hey Artists! ... I have this idea where four artists who all start a black and white A3 image, It is then posted on to the next artist, who posts it to the next until all 4 have scribbled away! The completed Illustration goes back to the original artist, but everyone gets a digital copy of each of the four illustrations’
His call was answered by over 20 artists. The first round of ‘Collaberation (Inter)Nation(al)’ was born. Now, with the second round almost completed and featuring 50 artists, the project has received attention from around the world.

I had a chance to ask Keith a few questions about the project.

I remember that first Facebook call out to artists, but how did the Collab project get started for you? What sparked that idea?

After travelling, my Facebook account became defunct, unless I wanted to be jealous of people still backpacking or find out what friends had for breakfast. I had to make it more interesting, so I started to use it for networking. I added as many artists and galleries as I could find which made my news feed a lot more interesting and the amazing art has inspired me so much.
I also started to buy a lot more art that I saw online, but as a poor artist my funds wouldn’t always allow purchases. I decided to have a go and see if I could rally a couple of artists together to collaborate on some art, so that way I was working with inspirational creative’s and got an original piece of art featuring several awesome artists at the end of the project. It turned out that there are many other artists who wanted the same thing.
My original goal was to have fun and create some awesome art with a few likeminded artists.

How has that goal changed as the project has grown?

Now I’m running around posting art to London to be exhibited, paying for tees and prints and organising events! It’s not even eight months old and it’s become a part time job! But the most important thing is still the creation of the art.

How is Collab Nation different from other collaborative art projects? What stands it apart from the crowd?

I’m not really aware of any other Collaborative projects. Maybe they can spell collaboration properly though! Ha!
I think one inspiration has to be the street art scene though, where several different artists come together to paint a wall. You may have several writers and several character artists working together.
If there are any other collaborative projects out there, it might be great to do something together. Give me a shout and we will see what we can do!

What's been the highlight for you as the project's organiser?

I think seeing the Digital Artist magazine, featuring an article about Collab, for sale in Madison Square Garden when I was in New York. That was pretty cool. I love the fact that so many great artists feel so passionately about the project, too, and I love the amazing art and three tees we have created.

What's your favourite piece that's come out of it so far?

I love them all! I have got one piece tattooed on me! Ychee’s stage two piece from Collab1 was a sugar skull which I convinced him to tattoo on me.
I really love it when someone adds something really clever. Boswell started his piece which looked like creatures climbing out from the depths of hell, and then Barry Thompson added a big wheel with a kid dropping a toy over the edge! Ha! Brilliant.
There are many pieces I love! I can think of loads right now! Being a little biased I think my current favourite is SPZero76 vs. Faunagraphic, although I’m sure that will change next week!

You’ve mentioned a handful of artists there. What are the backgrounds of the artists involved?

The artists are all from totally different art backgrounds. The artists are also from all over the world. Naturally there are more Bristol-based artists, as that’s where I’m based and I have a lot of friends who wanted to be involved, but they all feature across a wide range of art fields, too.

With that sort of variety, how do you decide which artists work together for each piece?

As the organiser, the fairest thing I can do is to pick names out of the hat to see who works together. I don’t want to give the artists any input there as it might become too cliquey like being in school. I also don’t want to start trying to be clever sticking artists with a similar style together.
I’m really enjoying seeing random artists working together – a children’s book illustrator adding to a piece started by a graffiti artist. I did separate all the artists into four groups for the last Experiment but I don’t think I will do that the next time. I thought it might be easier to chase up artists and control the flow, but it hasn’t worked out that way!

Sounds like we have a third experiment to look forward to! What are the plans going forward? Is there anything big on the horizon?

The main things on the horizon are Upfest. Collaberation (Inter)Nation(al) will be taking over a room upstairs at the event to draw on all the walls with lots of our amazing artists. We also have a team taking part in Secret Wars at Upfest, too, which is very scary! (Although a few rival teams have fellow Collabers on, too.)
Collab will be featuring at the Lounge on The Farm Festival. We have Collab 3 and Collab Australia set to start in late July, and I’m currently working out an opening party for that. We also have a web site being built by Stina Jones. We have even had interest from an advertising agency. There are a lot of things in the pipeline and Collab has a lot of potential!

It seems like you’ve had a load of good responses to the project.

Yes! The responses have been amazing. Everyone loves to see the pieces progress and the fact that we have so many top artists on board has prompted many more artists to seek involvement.
I’m still not sure in which direction Collab 3 should go. Should it grow again or stay the same? It’s quite hard to manage fifty artists so I’m not keen on it getting bigger, but then every new ‘Experiment’ needs to have an injection of new talent.

What's been the hardest part of organizing the project?
The hardest part is definitely chasing the artists and helping the project flow. Work, education and general life can be unpredictable and Collab has to be flexible. Sometimes being in the middle can be a pain! I sometimes have an artist slowing down the project while another artist is chasing me up for the work. I think the thing that annoys me the most is when artists just disappear and stop all contact! That’s really irritating!

Is there anything you would change about the project?

If I could make the original pieces of art get teleported straight to the next artist, and bypass the post office, I would. We have had a few pieces creased in transit and we have even lost a couple.
One or two artists have suggested emailing the pieces to each other to add their pieces to, but that doesn’t feel like collaboration to me. I can cut and paste pictures from the net whenever I want, it’s much better to be adding to the original! And I like having an awesome piece of original art at the end of the project, too.
It would be nice to get someone else to run the project and leave me to draw! Ha!

Street artist Felix Braun (FLX) will be attempting to draw for a world record breaking 24-hours non-stop for the charity Temwa, at Bristol's King Of Paint gallery, between the 26th and 27th of February.

What is this in aid of?

In Malawi 14% of the population is HIV positive and 11% of children die before reaching the age of five, so you really cannot over state how crucial an issue health education is.
One of the most effective ways of drawing local people’s attention to the issues involved is through community open days. Which is why, when his friends at the charity Temwa suggested Felix travel with them to Usisya, in Malawi, to work on a community mural project (with school children and local artists) to be unveiled at one of these open days, He jumped at the chance.

Little is known about the late actor Dennis Hopper’s art collection, but all was revealed at Christies Post War & Contemporary Art Auction late in 2010 when his estate was auctioned off in New York.

Amongst the artwork for sale was Andy Warhol’s “Portrait of Dennis Hopper” and “Jackie”, the latter going for a whopping $1,082,500.

Banksy “In the event of a divorce cut here” more commonly known as “Girl with Red Balloon” realized a sum of £146,500, more than 5 times the guide price. Other work included pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ed Ruscha and Keith Haring

Art as well as photography played a huge part in his life, which he managed to crossover in the 1996 movie "Basquiat". Dennis played Bruno Bischofberger, an art dealer alongside David Bowie who played the part of Warhol.

Jen Barnett caught up with Tom Rawles to ask about influences, inspiration & alternative careers.

Hi there, Tom. What should I call you? Tom? Cons? Something else? What's your 'art name'?

I’m signing Tom these days, but I’ve grown up writing Cons, so either. Last year I had a pretty big change in style when I started using oils instead of acrylic, and I wasn’t doing anything naughty on the street so it just felt like a good time to put Cons on the backburner.

How did you get started as an artist?

I’ve always painted but moving to Bristol five years ago was a real catalyst to my work rate increasing. The competitive side of me wanted to be producing stuff as good as what I was seeing, both in exhibitions and on the streets of the city.

These days I work slower and it’s about being happy with what I’m making and not worrying about what anybody else is doing, but it was definitely that initial shock and resulting motivation which started things seriously.

How do you describe your art?

In my work I don’t really like to have a fixed statement. I don’t know enough about anything to do that. I hope my paintings ask questions through an open-ended narrative of images and words, and that people have their own ideas of what’s going on. Aesthetically I would say layered and heavy are two pretty good words.

What is your source of inspiration?

I’ve been looking at Christian Renaissance painting a lot recently. I’m not religious but the level of narrative they contain blows my mind. They weren’t too bad at the painting bit either.

Bizarrely a book by Marcus Chown on atomic physics has made me think a lot about structure in my paintings. Also the poetry of Peter Porter, the madness of the Neasden Control Centre and music from the Def Jux label all the way through to Tru Thoughts.

What is your process in creating a new piece? How long does each piece take?

A piece usually takes about a month of painting most nights. Starting a new one is quite often a relief as I can sometimes get a bit ahead of myself and have been thinking about it whilst painting the current one.

The process is basically layering up ideas until there is some sort of theme emerging and then painting someone into that space.

Text seems to feature pretty heavily in many of your pieces. Why is this?

I like the way words and images work together. A word or a phrase is an immediate way of influencing the mood of the painting.

Paintings usually come from things I have written so it feels natural to add bits and pieces of the original idea.

What do you have coming up in terms of shows or new works?

I have a print coming out soon hopefully, possibly early next week. And I’m halfway through a painting which has been torturing me, so I’ll be glad to finish that. No shows in the diary.

You've been a part of some great group shows already. Which artists would you exhibit with in your dream group show?

I like this question. I want to say Connor Harrington and Anthony Lister, but I don’t know how Connor’s sheer epicness would sit with my chicken scratchings. So in dreamland the answer is Anthony Lister. With Connor Harrington in the next room.

Would you rather work big or work small? Do you prefer a big open wall to paint, or canvas?

I much prefer big, but definitely canvas over walls. A wall usually means that you’re in public. Being watched whilst painting makes me over think and the things that usually come naturally are forced, which gets a bit stressful. To overcome this I quite often get drunk beforehand, and then it’s hit or miss whether I’ll produce anything half decent anyway.

If you couldn't be an artist, what would you be?

Umm, a football journalist. Watching the ‘beautiful game’ and calling it work.

Jen Barnett caught up with Julian Kimmings and asked him about his work, his studio, and what he’d do if he wasn’t an artist.

As an opener can I ask, what were you just doing?

I've just been for a walk to get some fresh air, I always do around midday.

Tea or coffee? Milk? Sugar?

Coffee, milk no sugar. If it has to be tea, there'd better not be any milk in it.

Before we get into talking about your work, what has been the best exhibit you've been to recently?

I visited the Beautiful & The Damned show at Mooch in Manchester the other day, that was a great show.

You're often lumped in with the urban art world, but how do you class yourself?

I'm definitely not an ‘urban’ or ‘street’ artist. Yeah, I really like graffiti and my work has certain influences that are probably due to being surrounded by urban sprawl and the visual stimulus that goes with it, but for me urban artists (or street artists) use the placement of their art as part of the work itself. The street is their studio and their work is contextual to that placement.

My work is, in my opinion, more suited to canvas or other objects that you can hang on a wall. I do paint outside on occasion, but I don't go out looking to do so and not regularly enough to be classed as urban or street. I think I'm what's often referred to as ‘Lowbrow’.

How do you describe your art?

My art? It's like a stroll through the bedlam that is my subconscious. A mash-up of the influences and experiences I have had up til this point, like a conscious dream, if that doesn't sound to pretentious. I try not to get too serious about the reasons for it, just enjoy doing it.

They're good fun and it's always nice to meet members of the public and fellow artists, and chew the cud. I much prefer painting in the studio. I like peace and quiet, but it's always good to see and be around fellow creatives.

What's your artistic process? Where do the ideas for pieces come from? How does each piece start?

My process is fairly loose. It all usually starts with a phrase or rough idea that gives me a rush, and (annoyingly) often comes to me when I'm not in a position to act on it, so it gets jotted down on anything that I have to hand. When I get back to the studio, I'll look at my notes and if I still get that rush I'll start painting. I read a lot about ancient cultures, tribes and mythology, so that often plays a part in where my ideas spring from.

What is your studio space like?

It's a 3 metre by 3 metre purpose built wooden studio. I guess a shed would be the best description, but built from scratch by my own baby-soft hands. It gave me a lot of blisters. It sits in the back garden looming over the raspberries and blocking out most of the sunlight.

I don't leave work in there unless it's being worked on so when I'm working up to a show the house can turn into an exhibition in its own right.

What's next for you? Where do you want your art to go?

I have a few plans... There are a number of goals that I have yet to accomplish for 2010, and to start working on for 2011. Every year I look at what I've accomplished the previous 9 to 12 months and work out some realistic goals for the following period. This year I got a bit side-tracked and I have some time to make up, but I'm optimistic.

Speaking of the art, you sign your paintings with an 'RZ'. Where does this come from? What's the story behind it?

Long story, short... I used to paint ‘razors’/’razers’ as a kid and when I started painting again (on canvases), I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I started signing the artwork razors again, but it turns out there's a writer out there who tags his work razors, so it became 'rz'. It kind of stuck, and I like it.

What's the hardest thing about being an artist?

Keeping motivation and momentum up. I'll often do anything rather than go paint, despite absolutely enjoying the process once I get into it. It's something I have to push myself to get things done with. It's something I work on constantly.

Lastly, what would you do if you weren't an artist?

I'm not sure there's anything I'd want to do if I couldn't paint - probably set up a commune and turn my back on the world.

Jen Barnett interviews Bristol street artist Jody Thomas, whose art exhibition opens at Weapon of Choice Gallery today.

You seem to be making up for lost time, with quite a few gallery shows and street pieces since 2008. Now it's been a year since your last solo show. How has the work changed? What will make Dark Spaces different?

The glossy and noir-ish portraits that I'm known for, I think I've pretty much done. They are also now a fairly common sight around the UK scene, too, so the subject matter has changed slightly. I'm very much sticking to black and white, which I feel is truer to my roots. The work I do now is more detailed but it’s still very dark in tone.

What's the meaning behind the show's title? What can people expect to see, and what sort of price range will pieces be?

Dark Spaces shows the more shadowy and moody side to my portrait work. I've noticed that people are always drawn to darker imagery, especially on street pieces. I think they seem to strike a chord with people. I'm doing a few more small pieces this year and in terms of prices they will start at around £150 and go up to £600 plus. I'm also going to do some prints to order of the bigger pieces.

What / who are your artistic influences? What has been your favourite exhibit lately and are there any that you’re really looking forward to?

My main influences tend to be music and film to be honest but in terms of current artists I love the work of Jeremy Geddes and Sylvia Ji. I've always gone back to the old masters over the years also. I loved the Art From The New World exhibition at the Bristol City Museum. Not all of the pieces I liked, but I love the brashness and up-front tone of them and overall quality of the pieces was stunning.

Dondi who sadly passed away in 1998, made his mark on the graffiti scene during the late seventies and early eighties painting the subway trains in New York with bold, colourful pieces. After being featured in the graffiti bible 'Subway Art' and the classic film/documentary 'Stylewars', the American artist quickly became an icon within the graffiti-art scene in his own right.

Although not directly linked with the Bristol graffiti scene and the UK, Dondi and and his fellow N.Y writers had an extensive impact on many teenagers around the world, including a young Bristolian and Wild Bunch affiliate, Robert Del Naja who would later go on to form the world-renowned band Massive Attack.

As well as producing two decades of the most influential alternative dance music, 3D has been creating art for over 20 years - some of which has appeared on the band's album covers, such as Heligoland, he has also been featured in the celebrated book 'Spraycan Art' alongside legends such as Goldie, Seen & Mode 2.

A lucky second winner will bag themselves this signed Beezer print of Robert Del Naja aka 3D in action, worth £95, kindly donated by Tangent Books! The image - taken from 'Wild Dayz' one of many aspiring street art books published by Tangent.

So, there are plenty of charity events, plenty of causes worth fighting for, whole countries at war.... But sometimes it’s just about helping your friends, helping those you love. And here we’re taking the opportunity to help one of our best friends.

If you don’t know, here’s the introduction. Rowdy is one of the longest standing players in UK graffiti, supporting the scene and playing his part in what has now turned into a global phenomenon. He has painted with the best of them, in fact is one of the best of them, always sticking true to his vision, rocking his own style, never selling out his ideas. Recently he walked out of his house, which also served as his studio and when he returned a half hour later, everything had been burned to the ground. EVERYTHING! ID, money, clothes, personal possessions, art, the ability to make art, everything gone!

So, we’re taking this as an opportunity to support someone who has so readily supported us as a scene by auctioning some art to help him get back to a position where he can do what he does best, making art.

It’s a testament to his popularity and reputation that so many artists have donated work to this auction. All work has been personally donated by the artists and the galleries that represent them: Banksy, Paul Insect, Swoon, Sickboy, Hush, Espo, the whole Burning Candy crew and a whole bunch more... So, it’s your chance to buy something beautiful and at the same time help out someone who has helped in his way to make graffiti and street art what it is today.

The 18:10hrs screening on Fri 5 March will be introduced by Steve Wright, Venue's Art Editor and author of 'Banksy's Bristol'. The screening will then be followed by an informal discussion hosted by Steve and Felix Braun (author of 'Children of the Can'). The Arts House is a new cafe/bar that has just opened up in Stokes Croft. As the name suggests they don't just serve food, it also serves as a bar, cinema, live music venue and art gallery. I had heard about this new Jamie Hewlett exhibition on the radio so decided to slip on the boots and venture down. Jamie Hewlett is best known for his artwork for the Gorillaz band & Tank Girl. After jetting out to Bangladesh to see the effect climate change is having on the country the experience inspired a series of nine watercolours that can be viewed on a larger scale. It's a nice space for artists to exhibit as it also has a downstairs section which allows a great deal more space. Here's some fliks.

Stumbled accross a heap of old HHC magazines when cleaning out the loft and ended up reading them intstead of cleaning. Always had a good section on Graffiti near the back and in the Febuary 1996 issue it had this piece by Chain & Warp (aka Boswell)More HHC fliks up soon!

Wild Dayz Book launch at Bristol City Museum

A low-key affair at the Bristol City Museum although there was a fair turn out of around 400 people. Limited edition prints of Beezers Photos adourned the walls of a make shift Dug Out. The after party was held at the Watershed and I managed to snap off a few photo's (Most out of focus due to Rum)
